Polder Glies

The Polder Glies is a floodplain in the unified municipality of Schiffdorf in the district of Cuxhaven . It is located north of Sellstedt on the edge of the nature reserve " Sellstedter See and Ochsentriftmoor / Wildes Moor ", in which it is included. The polder is around 85 hectares in size.

The polder was created in 1959 as part of a general plan for large-scale drainage. The soil was cultivated and then used for agriculture. By subsidence of the dehydrated fen soil many areas were damp but again, making it difficult to agricultural use.

After the agricultural use had been given up, the dike to Sellstedter See was partially removed and relocated to the southeast in autumn 2006 as part of a compensation measure for the construction of the Luneort industrial area in Bremerhaven 's Fischereihafen district . The formerly heavily drained area has been rewetted and serves as a flood collection basin for the Geeste floods .

The relocation of the dike and the rewetting of the site created a biotope with a shallow water area of over 54 hectares, of which an area of around 28 hectares forms permanent still water . In addition to the shallow water zones , the polder is characterized by extensive reed beds and wet grasslands. It is a habitat for water , waders and meadow birds and an important resting and wintering area for migratory birds . So come here u. a. Sea eagles and ospreys , crane and kingfisher in front.

The Polder Glies has been part of the nature reserve "Sellstedter See and Ochstentriftmoor / Wildes Moor" since September 17, 2010. Together with this and the Polder Bramel to the north of the nature reserve, it forms a biotope network .

At the edge of the nature reserve between the polder and the Sellstedter See there is an observation tower from which the area can be viewed.
