history
In the past, Polenšak belonged to the Dornau dominion and was administered from the Dornau Castle there . In 1918 the Kingdom of Yugoslavia came into being and the rule of Dornau was abolished. The village has been part of the Dornava municipality since then. From the 17th to the 19th century the pilgrimage to the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary played an important role. In 1945 the pilgrimages were banned by the communist government. Since 1990 annual pilgrimages have been carried out by the Catholic Church.
Attractions
Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary
The current Catholic church was built in 1621 in place of a smaller previous church to cope with the rush of thousands of pilgrims in the 17th century. It is located on a small hill above the village. The building was constructed between 1621 and 1633 and is architecturally assigned to the early baroque . It consists of a rectangular nave with elements from the Renaissance and a three-pointed presbytery . The interior is from the baroque era. Today's church tower was built in 1772. The original bells were melted down during the First World War. In the 1990s the church was renovated inside and out.
Polandšak Farm Museum
In 1995 a permanent exhibition on rural life in the region was opened in an old former farm. In 2003 the collection was converted into a museum. It contains agricultural implements and farm implements from the 18th and 19th centuries. On the Thanksgiving Day there are demonstrations in which old equipment is used to harvest, thresh and grind.
Polandšak ski jump
A ski jumping hill has existed in Polenšak near Kmetova Graba since the early 1970s. The ski jump was rebuilt in 2000 and since then two competitions have been held there every year. In 2013 there was night jumping for the first time.
