Politika ( Greek Πολιτικά ( n. Pl. )) Is a village and a locality in the municipality of Messapia in the municipality of Dirfys-Messapia on the Greek island of Evia . Politika has about 1,600 inhabitants. It is located 20 km west of the island's capital, Chalkida . The place has two centers. The "old town" in the north of the village and the Paralia Politikon in the south on the coast of the Euboean Gulf . Furthermore, the villa settlements Theotokos and Limenari 5 km east of the old town belong to the area of ​​the village.

The inhabitants of Politika work in agriculture and tourism , among other things . Furthermore, the companies Evia Gas (gas cartridge manufacturer), Paliroia AE (production of ready meals) and Soya Hellas ( soy processing company) belong to the municipality. Soja Hellas and Paliroia AE are among the market leaders in their sector in Greece. In the past, Greenpeace activists have occupied the berths of the ships at Soja Hellas several times to protest against genetically modified food.

The company LARKO Mining Industries also uses the landing stages at Cape Politika to move ore, which is transported on conveyor belts over a distance of 20 kilometers, onto ships. The industrial zone is about 7 kilometers east of the center of Politika.

In the center of the old town there is an old Venetian observation tower from the 13th century . The tower is still well preserved, but not open to visitors. Two kilometers north of the village is the nunnery of Panagia Perivleptos (Greek: "The prudent mother of God"). The monastery is also open to visitors. A traditional festival takes place on August 15th on the Assumption of Mary. Other churches in the village are also open to visitors all year round ( Aghia Paraskevi , in the center - Aghios Dimitrios near Tria Kyparissia - Aghios Helias in the northwest of the village on the road to Nerotrivia ) In spring and summer the number of residents increases to over 5,000, since many Athenians and foreigners have holiday homes and apartments in Politika that they are living in at the time. On the approximately 1 kilometer long pebble beach of the village there is a hotel according to Central European standards and many smaller bungalows . There is also the possibility of camping and there are parking spaces for caravans.

Politika is located about 30 kilometers from the pilgrimage site of Prokopi and only 7 kilometers from the long sandy beaches of Daphni. A bus route runs several times a day between the island's capital Chalkida and the old town of Politika.

history

The area around Politika has historically been inhabited since the Neolithic . Human remains at the Pigadia site testify to this. The area was not populated in ancient times. It belonged to the sphere of influence of the city-state of Chalkis. The first traces of settlement in modern times can be found in the 8th century AD. Politika was a Venetian observation post and, like the rest of the island of Evia, came under Turkish rule in the 15th century . When the Greek state was founded in 1830 , Politika belonged as part of the island of Euboea (Évia) to the founding territory of the Kingdom of Greece .
