Polonium (IV) chloride , PoCl 4 is a chemical compound of polonium from the group of chlorides .

Extraction and presentation

The compound can result from the reaction of polonium (IV) oxide and phosphorus pentachloride or thionyl chloride or can be produced by halogenation with hydrochloric acid .

The salt changes color at higher temperatures. It turns straw yellow at the melting point, scarlet red at the boiling point and blue-green at 500 ° C. From a temperature of 200 ° C, the polonium (IV) chloride decomposes into the divalent polonium (II) chloride . This creates chlorine . Polonium (IV) chloride is able to form halogen complexes. Possible polonium chloride complexes would be PoCl 5 - or PoCl 6 2− . It dissolves well in thionyl chloride and moderately in ethanol and acetone . It can be dissolved in water by hydrolysis . The chloride is also soluble in hydrochloric acid.
