Pom, the loyal foal ( French original title: Pom, le Poulain ) is a Franco - Belgian animal film directed by Olivier Ringer from 2006 .

action

In the Ardennes , horses are still used to work in the forest to pull the heavy tree trunks to the trucks. In the family business, which is run by the barely legal junior boss Patrick and his father, the Ardennes mare Mirabelle is one of the best horses. She is familiar with the hard work and leads the other horses as the lead horse when transporting the logs. She recently gave birth to her first foal, Pom, which is the pride and joy of former tree cutter Julien. The old man can no longer work with his hands, but he takes sensitive care of the horses that are close to his heart. With this he comes into conflict with Patrick, who has no feeling for horses. When the horses need a break after a long shift and can no longer move a heavy tree trunk, Patrick wants to force them to move on. With his uncontrolled, aggressive nature he makes the horses shy, the tree trunk to slip and thus endangers the horses tied to the tree. Patrick himself is injured during the maneuver. He has to go to the hospital and in front of his father accuses Mirabelle of injuring him. She had become dangerous since Pom was born. His father, who had to raise Patrick alone after the early death of his wife and who is no longer up to him, gives in. He asks Julien to take Mirabelle to the slaughterhouse, but Julien is able to get Mirabelle to be sold to a caravan rental company as a draft horse instead.

Pom is now an orphaned foal. He was still suckled by Mirabelle and does not accept the substitute milk that Julien has prepared. Patrick torments the foal by forcing it to get used to the halter. The boss in turn forbids Julien to bring Pom to Mirabelle, but the foal quickly becomes so weak that it can no longer get up. The vet thinks that it has lost all will to live and gives up the animal. Julien puts Pom on a wagon and drives to the rental caravan. However, Mirabelle has been traveling with a family as a trailer horse for a few days. The caravan rental company doesn't know where to go. Julien starts looking. Meanwhile, Mirabelle was able to tear herself away during a break and set off to meet her foal. Policemen try in vain to catch the sighted mare. She returns to a pasture in the forest, where Julien sleeps with Pom and the other horses. Pom greets his mother happily and breaks out of the pasture. The other horses also leave the fenced area. The next morning Julien only finds a horse not far from the pasture. He goes in search of the others who are needed for woodwork.

Patrick, who is in charge of the loggers, believes Julien let the horses go. He's been looking for a reason to fire Julien for a long time. He finds Julien on a meadow with Mirabelle and Pom, who run away at the sight of Patrick's SUV. Patrick follows them and drives the animals into a swamp. Pom gets stuck. Patrick ties Mirabelle to his SUV with a rope and drives the horse behind him at high speed. He leaves Pom to die, but Julien manages to save the foal from the swamp. On the way back he sees Patrick's SUV over a precipice. The car in which Patrick is sitting is only held by Mirabelle, who braces herself against the rope, as she learned to do while working in the forest. She is at the end of her strength and Julien threatens to cut the rope, as the mare is more important to him. Only after a while does he hear Patrick's pleading. With his riding horse, Mirabelle and Pom, he manages to pull the wagon from the abyss. Mirabelle collapses shortly afterwards. Although Patrick complains tearfully about his health, Julien obliges him to take care of Mirabelle, who gave his life for him. Meanwhile he goes to get help. A little later a rescue helicopter arrives at the scene of the accident. Patrick is purified. When the paramedic tries to take him to the nearest hospital, he insists that Mirabelle be taken away and treated instead. Some time later the mare has recovered and is allowed to go back to the pasture to see Pom, who greets her happily.
