The Pont du Bras de la Plaine is a road bridge on the island of La Réunion in the Indian Ocean , which is part of the European Union as a French overseas department . It leads the Route départementale D 26 at a height of 110 m over the gorge of the Bras de la Plaine , which joins the Bras de Cliaos to the Rivière Saint-Étienne after a few kilometers , and connects the town of Entre-Deux , which is halfway up, with the higher districts of Saint-Pierre .
description
The 305 m long and 11.9 m wide bridge has a span of 280.7 m. It has two lanes and cycle paths separated by markings. The use of their two sidewalks is no longer allowed since barbed wire was placed outside the railing to prevent suicides .
The bridge is a composite structure consisting of a pre- stressed concrete deck, two postless frameworks made of steel tubes and a curved concrete slab as the lower chord. The weight of the bridge's two cantilever arms is balanced by large counterweights outside the abutments .
The two trusses take on the function of the webs of a hollow box with a trapezoidal cross-section. Their overall height decreases from 17.6 m at the abutments to 4 m at the apex. The steel pipes have an outer diameter of 610 mm, only the pipes at the apex are 324 mm thick. They have a constant center distance of 12.70 m on the deck.
The lower plate made of reinforced concrete is curved in a parabolic shape. Their dimensions are determined by the variable base points of the steel pipes and the different loads. At the abutments it is 4.12 m wide and 1.70 m high; At the apex the slab is 0.20 m thick, its edge beams are 0.65 m thick. While the carriageway slab is continuous , the lower slab has a gap in the apex between the base points of the last steel pipes.
The bridge was built using cantilever . A cable crane with two 35 m high masts and a span of 415 m supplied the construction site. For this purpose, the tips of the masts could be inclined sideways by 8 m to both sides. The carriageway slab was concreted in sections of 12 m using a scaffolding beam . After a section, the corresponding steel tubes of the framework were installed. A support for the lower plate was hung on the carriageway slab, which has now hardened and supported by the steel pipes. After this had been concreted and the first section of the cantilever was completed, the processes were repeated.
The bridge was designed by Jean Muller International with the creative support of the architect Alain Amadéo and built by Bouygues between 2000 and 2002 with financial support from the European Union .
In 2003 she received the Outstanding Structure Award from the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE).
