The Ponte de São João ( Bridge of Saint John the Baptist ) is a railway bridge over the Douro between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia , which leads the Linha do Norte over the river.

It stands about 150 m above the Ponte Maria Pia , the wrought-iron arch bridge built by Gustave Eiffel and opened in 1877 , over which rail traffic was handled until the opening of the Ponte de São João. Both bridges connect General Torres train station in Vila Nova de Gaia with Porto-Campanhã train station, Porto's main train station.

The new bridge was opened on June 24, 1991, the Dia de São João ( St. John's Day), which is celebrated as a city festival in many Portuguese cities, including Porto.

description

The Ponte de São João is a total of 1140 m long and 12 m wide. It has a 250 m wide main opening above the river, the two pillars of which are close to the bank. In the south, there are 125 m + 5 × 60 m + 59 m wide bridges and a 50 m long transition structure with which the initially steep slope and the houses and streets in the flatter terrain are crossed. Fields of 125 m + 2 × 60 m + 50 m and a 61 m long ramp are connected over the steeper northern slope.

The track support is a 12 m wide, slightly haunched prestressed - hollow box , which with the two pillars one of the main opening frame bridge is formed. It is designed as a continuous beam that rests with bearings on the other pillars.

The two pillars of the main opening have a round hollow cross-section at the base, which merges into a slim rectangular cross-section after a few meters. They are seamlessly connected to the deck girder, making the function of the frame visible.

The two tracks are 68 m above the water level. They are attached to a slab track . Derailment protection has been laid along the entire length of the bridge . There are narrow makeshift platforms in the middle and on both sides of the tracks. Lamps are installed over the railing at regular intervals .

The Ponte de São João was designed by Edgar Cardoso and executed between 1984 and 1991. The “FERDOURO-ACE” consortium carried out the construction, the following companies formed the consortium: Sociedade de Construções Soares da Costa , Teixeira Duarte and Obras Públicas e Cimento Armado. Bratex-Agrupamento para Consultaria e Gestão de Projectos, ACE carried out the construction supervision . The bridge is now owned by Infraestruturas de Portugal .

With the opening of the double-track Ponte de São João, the single-track Ponte Maria Pia went out of service.
