Povilas Vaitonis

Povilas (Paul) Vaitonis (born August 15, 1911 in Užpaliai near Utena , Russian Empire , today Lithuania , † April 23, 1983 in Hamilton , Canada ) was a Lithuanian-Canadian chess player .

Life

Vaitonis grew up in the farmer's family in what is now the Rajongemeinde Utena . From the age of 5 he played chess. After graduating from school, he studied at the Faculty of Humanities at Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas . In 1931 he became university champion in chess and in 1932 master of Kaunas. He then studied law at Vilnius University .

In 1943/1944 he emigrated to Sweden . Here he met his wife Magdalena. From 1949 he lived in Canada, whose championship he won in 1951 and 1957. In 1952 he became international champion , in the same year he took part in the Saltsjöbaden interzonal tournament. With the Lithuanian team he took part in the Chess Olympiads in 1933 , 1935 , 1937 and 1939 as well as in the unofficial Chess Olympiad Chess Olympics 1936 , he was a member of the Canadian national team at the Chess Olympiads in 1954 and 1958 .

Vaitonis was married. With his wife Magdalena Martinkutė he had the children Danutė (Donna), Vida, Nijolė, Rūta, Džina (Gina), Algis.
