The Protestant parish church of St. Nikolaus in Isny im Allgäu , a Württemberg town in the Ravensburg district , is a three-aisled pillar basilica , to whose Romanesque building from 1288 a late Gothic choir was added in the 15th century. This so-called Nikolaikirche became the Protestant parish church after the Reformation . Above the sacristy , which was built in the 15th century, there is a vaulted room with a preacher's library that contains a valuable collection of cradle prints and old books that were intended for the evangelical preachers who were appointed .

history

St. Nikolaus, the so-called Nikolaikirche, is the successor to the People's Church, which was built in close proximity to the monastery church of the former St. Georg monastery . In 1284 the churches burned down along with the monastery and most of the city. From the church rebuilt in 1288 by Heinrich von Brunow, the surrounding walls of the nave, the arched windows of the northern Lichtgaden, the arcade arches inside and the tower up to the bell house have been preserved. The late Gothic choir with its star rib vault was added in the 15th century. When the church tower was comprehensively renewed in 1472, the sacristy with the preacher's library above it is likely to have been built and vaulted. The Eberz'sche Chapel was probably built around this time as the burial place of a wealthy Isnys bourgeois family.

During the great city fire in 1631, the church burned down again. Despite the difficult times of war - in the middle of the Thirty Years War - reconstruction began as early as 1636. The tower was raised and then received its current onion dome . In 1689 the south aisle collapsed. In the years 1854 to 1860 the church was furnished in a neo-Gothic style. In 1959 the west facade was renovated, followed by a total renovation from 1968–72. After the facade renovation in 1987, extensive repairs were carried out in 2005/2006.

Exterior

The exterior of the basilica is characterized by the Romanesque nave, which has a fairly unadorned west facade and to which a late Gothic choir was added in the east. The long nave is dominated by the tower with its onion dome, which is typically baroque. The two-story sacristy is attached to the nave and consists of a vaulted room on each floor. The predicant library is located in the upper room. Next to the sundial on the south side of the choir is a building inscription that documents the year of completion.

Interior

The interior is characterized by the strong pillars with their round arches stretched between them, which separate the high central nave from the low side aisles. The massive coffered ceiling is an achievement of the 19th century, it seems to press something on the room and on the side walls. The relatively delicate organ gallery and the simple organ front create a certain balance. The likewise neo-Gothic church pews can only be found in the side aisles, while the central nave is furnished with chairs that compensate for the heavy wooden ceiling. The coffered ceilings of the aisles are kept simple.

Window and crucifixion group

The colorful apse windows are by Wolf-Dieter Kohler, the south windows in the choir by the Isny artist Ursula Dethleffs. The remaining windows, which show John the Evangelist , the Madonna and Child and Jesus with children, date from the 19th century . The choir arch lettnerartig filling Crucifixion was created by Ulrich Henn.

Pulpit and font

The pulpit is typical of the 19th century; it is a mixture of styles from Renaissance, Baroque and Neo-Gothic. It has a crown-like end on which the risen One stands. The baptismal font is a two-part structure consisting of the lower part with the actual baptismal font and the movable upper part, which can be pulled up. On the one hand it shows the scene of the baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist and on the other hand it symbolizes the baptism event through the dove floating down, which is supposed to represent the Holy Spirit.

Church stalls

The church stalls in the nave

The neo-Gothic church stalls are only available in the side aisles of the nave, the central nave is furnished with movable chairs. There are also stalls in the choir that come from another era.

Predicant library

The space above the sacristy is approximately 5 mx 5 m. It is curved and painted. It contains a large treasure trove of books that point to a particular detail of the history of the imperial city of Isny in the 16th century. There has been a library there for around 500 years, which was dedicated to an Isny preacher position. Protestant ministers should preach the word of the Bible to citizens reasonably and faithfully. Many pastors and chaplains at that time were unable to do this.

Cultural monument

The remarkable surviving church is an outstanding testimony to popular piety in Isny and also an important urban dominant. There is a special public interest in their preservation - including the library and equipment - for scientific and local history reasons. It is a protected cultural monument in the entire Isny im Allgäu complex. The Nikolaikirche is listed as a protected cultural monument in the monument preservation plan.
