The soil is of volcanic origin and therefore fertile. There are also several freshwater springs and rivers in the interior and the southern part of the prefecture. This is also where the Mihogoni valley lies , at the western end of which is the equally high mountain Ouongobabounou . On the west coast is the Djirani cliff . On the north coast, the four larger rivers Nkouahini , Mro Oualembini , Mouhoudzoundzou and Mro oua Bouéni flow into the Indian Ocean .
Islands
Fomboni is almost exclusively on Mohéli , but some offshore islands also belong to the prefecture. On the west coast is the island of Damou, connected by a narrow isthmus , and the islands of Île Avourina , Chissioua Bouélachamba and Roches Chiconi .
