The Prövenholz nature reserve is located in the area of the city of Geseke in the Soest district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The area extends south of the core town of Geseke and on the north-western outskirts of Steinhausen , a district of the town of Büren . It is located north and south of the A 44 , and the L 549 state road runs to the east .

Since 1990 a 142.23 hectare area has been designated as a nature reserve for Geseke under the code number SO-024.
