The Pratomagno is part of the Tuscan Apennines and is separated from its main ridge by the young Amolauf , the Casentino . Both mountain ranges run parallel in the north-west-south-east direction. The Arno flows around the Pratomagno to the south near Arezzo and borders the mountains in the west on the way to Florence. This upper Arno valley (Italian Valdarno ) called section of the Arno separates the Pratomagno from the Chianti area . In the north, the Pratomagno merges into the main Apennine ridge. The slopes of the Pratomagno are heavily forested, the rounded peaks, on the other hand, are forest-free and overgrown with meadows. The larger southeastern part of Pratomagno is in the province of Arezzo , the northwestern part in the province of Florence .

Highest elevations

The highest elevation of the Pratomagno is the Croce di Pratomagno ( 1592  m slm ), with the 20 m high, red metal lattice cross. Other peaks are the Poggio Masserecci ( 1548  m slm ) and the Monte Secchieta ( 1449  m slm ).

geology

The Pratomagno is essentially made of sandstone, which was deposited here in the sea 30 to 20 million years ago, before the Apennine uplift.

The courtship

In the upper Arno valley, on the south-western slope of the Pratomagno, between the municipalities of Reggello and Terranuova Bracciolini rises up to 100 m high cliff of yellow and ocher-colored clays and sands, formed in the Pliocene as a sediment of the lake in the upper Arno valley.
Presumably Leonardo da Vinci depicted courtship as the background in his picture Mona Lisa .
