Prichard is an American city in Alabama in Mobile County . It has about 27,900 inhabitants (as of 2004) on an area of 66.0 km².

Prichard was founded in the 1830s as a small settlement on the then telegraph line. The place remained a very small settlement until around 1900 , after which the population grew steadily. In 1925 Prichard received city rights and during the Second World War some shipbuilders and with them many workers settled in the city.

In the 1960s , the city reached its highest population with 47,371 citizens. Since then, the number of inhabitants has been falling steadily in the entire region due to the difficult economic situation. In the 1980s , unemployment among residents of the city center reached 80 percent, but has now fallen back to 30 percent.

Prichard achieved particular fame shortly before Christmas on December 23, 2010: due to lack of money, faced with the choice either to discontinue the municipal services (such as waste disposal or police service) or to cancel the pension benefits for 150 retired pensioners without replacement, the city decided on the latter as well insolvency proceedings with a declaration of bankruptcy . An increase in taxes and levies was unreasonable for the citizen because of their particular level and therefore could not be carried out. This unique occurrence in US history could mark the beginning of further cancellations of pensions promised by some tight public authorities.

One place in Prichard is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of January 30, 2020), the Charles Denby Garrison Sr. House .
