history

The ship was built and commissioned in October 1922 by the British shipyard Philip & Co. near Coombe as yard no 606 for the then British colony of Gambia . The passenger ship was baptized in the name of Prince of Wales , the Prince of Wales (then: Edward VIII. ), Who was on an official visit to the Gambian capital Bathurst (today's name: Banjul) in 1924 .

During its operation, it moved a distance of 390 kilometers or 300 miles from Bathurst on the Atlantic Ocean upstream to Basse Santa Su . She covered this distance in around a week.

The Prince of Wales , like the later Lady Chilel Jawara, served as the first mobile post office in the Gambia. The mail items were stamped "TPO - Traveling Post Office" at no extra charge.

The ship was decommissioned in 1953, the further fate is not documented in detail. In an interview it was mentioned that the Prince of Wales was later operated under the name Kankujery and then Wharfi Njaago .
