The Principal Point (English for main point , in Argentina Cabo Principal ; in the United Kingdom Pursuit Point , English for employment point ) is a striking and icy headland that forms the southeastern end of Wiencke Island in the Palmer Archipelago off the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located 6 km east of Cape Errera .

Participants of the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903-1905) under the direction of polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot mapped them. Scientists on an Argentine expedition carried out from 1953 to 1954 named them after their topographical prominence. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names translated this designation into English in 1965. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1959, however, in cynical memory of an unsuccessful attempt to climb Luigi Peak by geodesists of the Royal Navy .
