Proctorville is a village in Lawrence County , Ohio, on the north bank of the Ohio River . According to an estimate in 2007, the place had 623 inhabitants. Proctorville, which was initially called Quaker Bottom , is named after Jacob Proctor, a shop owner who settled there in 1834.

Geography and history

The village is located in the extreme south of Ohio on the north bank of the Ohio River in a former floodplain . The predominantly wooded area is slightly hilly and at some points reaches a height of around 250 meters. Numerous streams flow south into the Ohio River. The land use is characterized by forestry , only in the valleys of the streams there are pastures for livestock.

In 1797, the first pioneers settled on the banks of the Ohio River and called it Quaker Bottom (German: Quäker -Grund ). When shipping on the river began, the area developed into a trading center in the early 19th century. In 1834 a Jacob Proctor built a shop on the north bank of the river, which soon became known as Proctor's Landing among river boaters . The initially humble settlement of Quaker Bottom grew rapidly, and in 1878 when the town became an official parish it was given its new name to honor Jacob Proctor. On April 7, 1900, a fire destroyed most of the shops, and floods in 1913 and 1937 caused great damage in Proctorville.

Since 1985, the village has been connected to the region's cultural center, Huntington , West Virginia , by the East End Bridge . Until then there was only one ferry connection over the Ohio River. Ohio University has a branch in Proctorville .
