Progo is an approximately 138 kilometers long river on the Indonesian island of Java . It rises north of the Sundoro volcano and flows into the Indian Ocean . The Progo flows through the provinces of Jawa Tengah (in German Central Java) and Yogyakarta .

The source is on the slopes of the Sundoro volcano, around which it turns north. In the vicinity of the city of Temanggung it then flows in a southerly direction past Magelang and through the Kedu plain , the cradle of ancient civilizations on Java. In the vicinity of the temples of Borobudur , Mendut and Pawon the main tributary Elo flows into the Progo. Shortly afterwards it flows on to Yogyakarta , where it then flows into the Indian Ocean.

The river lies in an area of 4077 square kilometers, which also includes the two rivers Serang and Okap . About 5.4 million people live there.

Many of its right tributaries, such as Kedu, Gintung, Klegung, Semawang and Tangsi, arise on the slopes of the 3,320 meter high Sumbing volcano , while the left tributaries Elo, Pabelan, Blongkeng, Batang and Krasak arise from the two volcanoes Merbabu and Merapi .

The area around the river was the scene of battles between the Indonesian national hero Diponegoro and the Dutch colonial rulers in the great rebellion of 1825–1830.

The river's water is used for irrigation. The Progo is used for rafting tourism.

Sand is mainly extracted from the lower course of the river.
