Provins (company)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Provins is a public limited company based in Sion and a Swiss wine producer . Provins processes a tenth of the Swiss grapes into wine or a fifth of all grapes in the canton of Valais , the largest wine region in Switzerland . The company employs 90 people and generates annual sales of CHF 47 million.

history

In 1930 the Cooperative Association of Valais Wineries was founded with the aim of freeing winemakers from their dependence on wine dealers. In 2020 Provins has around 2900 shareholders (many of them winemakers). Around 1500 grape suppliers cultivate around 750 hectares of vineyards. Provins itself took over the cultivation of 250 hectares in 2008.

The members of the former cooperative PROVINS société coopérative have at the Extraordinary General Meeting of 14 April 2020, a large majority for a controlling stake (70%) by Fenaco voted. The cooperative was then converted into a public limited company.

The winery

The cellar center in Sion with a total capacity of 10 million liters is one of the most modern in Switzerland. There are three collection points that collect the harvest from the Provins winemakers. The terroir of the Swiss Rhone Valley has a lot of sun, little rainfall and around 3000 kilometers of dry stone walls . Multi-layered, complex and fine red and white wines are produced, a total of around 120 wines from twenty local and traditional Valais grape varieties .

Certifications and Awards

Provins Winery has been ISO 9001 certified for quality management system since 1999 and ISO 14001 for environmental management system since 2004 . In 2007 it was also the first Swiss winery to meet the requirements of the ISO 22000 standard for food safety .

In 2004, Provins was the first Valais winery to receive the “Valais Excellence” label. Provins was “Swiss Winemaker of the Year” in 2008 and 2013.

criticism

In December 2014, the Provins winery published an advertisement by the canton chemist due to unsuitable sugar fortification . An independent laboratory then analyzed all 132 Provins brands. Ultimately, 30,000 liters were affected by the excessive sugar fortification, based on an annual production of around nine million liters. The sugared wine, a cuvée from the 2011 and 2012 grape harvests, was withdrawn from the market and distilled.

In September 2012, the Provins, Orsat, Giroud, Germanier, Taillefer and Schenk wineries are said to have agreed on the prices they wanted to pay the winegrowers for their previous year's harvest. The Giroud winery is said not to have agreed to this convention. A further agreement that minimum prices for wine sales to wholesalers should not be undercut should not have come about because not all wine dealers agreed to this.
