Governor Latif al-Tarfa (2010)

Wasit ( Arabic واسط, DMG Wāsiṭ ) is an Iraqi governorate on the border with Iran .

Size and population

The governorate is 17,153 km². About 890,000 people live here. The capital is Kut , which was the name of the governorate until 1976. The name comes from the Arabic word Wasit , which means middle . This clarified the situation between the cities of Baghdad and Basra . Malik Chalaf al-Wadi has been the governor since 2015.

The Wasit Districts are:

• al-Hayy
• al-Kut
• an-Na'maniyya
• as-Suwaira
• al-Aziziyya

On October 15, 2005, out of 280,128 voters, 95.70% voted for the new Iraqi constitution.
