The Zhejiang Provincial Museum ( abbreviation :浙江省博物馆; traditional characters :;浙江省博物館Pinyin : bówùguǎn Zhèjiāngshěng English;. Zhejiang Provincial Museum , abbreviated ZPM ) is located on the Gushan Island (孤山), the largest island of the West Lake in the city Hangzhou , Zhejiang Province , and has the address Gushan Lu 25. It emerged from the Zhejiang West Lake Museum founded in November 1929 (abbreviation: 浙江省 立 西湖 博物馆; Pinyin: Zhèjiāng shěnglì Xī Hú bówùguǎn).

It harbors a wide variety of art and cultural treasures, including recent archaeological finds from the Neolithic Hemudu culture .

Holdings of the ZPM

It houses more than 100,000 objects. Including ceramic, lacquer, wood and bone artifacts from the Hemudu culture (7000–4500 BC / 5000–3300 BC); Jade artefacts and silk fabrics from the Liangzhu culture (3400–2000 BC), bronze implements from Yue Staat state , celadon ceramics from the Yue kilns from the Tang period, the Longquan kiln from the Song period, and the government-owned kilns of the Southern Song. There are bronze mirrors from Huzhou as well as calligraphy and paintings by local painters from the Ming and Qing periods and other important cultural treasures.

Departments and locations of the ZPM

The ZPM comprises three departments. “Gushan Branch” is the central point of contact (No. 25 Gushan Road, Hangzhou, Zhejiang PC: 31007).

Gushan Department

Located on the southern slope of the Gushan, this department for the historical collections is embedded in the garden landscape of the West Lake and comprises 20,400 m² in nine pavilions and halls:

  • Gallery of historical and cultural finds
  • Celadon Pottery Gallery
  • Exhibition on the ancient Yue family
  • Gallery of Gemstones
  • Treasure Collection Gallery
  • Lu Xiaguang Art Gallery

Permanent exhibition of the collection and the works of Lu Xiaguang , collector and painter (1906–1994). The founding of the Lu Xiaguang Art Gallery within the Gushan Department of the ZPM goes back to a contact in 1993 with the then Prime Minister Jiang Zemin , in which Lu Xiaguang agreed to donate part of his collection of European paintings and his own works to the Chinese state. Lu was in France at the time.

Chang Shuhong Gallery

The Chang Shuhong Gallery is a permanent exhibition of the 240 oil paintings, gouaches, and sketches that were given to the museum by the painter's family in 1999. Chang Shuhong ( 常 書 鴻 , Cháng Shūhǒng ) was born in Hangzhou in his youth in France. Since 1937 teacher at the "National Art School" in Hangzhou. In 1943 he went to Dunhuang to preserve the Mogao grottoes over 40 years of work .

Westsee Gallery

The Westsee Gallery was completed in 1999. It is located on the site of the former "National Art Gallery" (co-founded by Lin Fengmian and Ai Qing , today the Chinese College of the Arts ). The works of calligraphers and painters from Zhejiang are on display, with a focus on the works of Huang Binhong .

Wenlan Pavilion

To the west of the Gushan section of the ZPM are the remains of an imperial palace from the Qing period. In addition, the “Wenlan Pavilion” ( 文澜 阁 , Wénlán gé ), an imperial library founded in 1783, with the task of keeping one of the seven copies of the Siku Quanshu . The current complex with other buildings was built during the reign of Emperor Guang Xu (1871–1908). In 2001 the Wenlan Pavilion was declared a "national cultural heritage of China" by the State Council.

Wulin department of the ZPM

This department of the ZPM is located on West Lake Cultural Square and, together with the “Zhejiang Memorial Hall of Revolutionary History”, covers 20,000 m². The offer focuses on patriotic education and the history of the Chinese Revolution. Included are the non-material cultural heritage of Zhejiang, folklore tradition and historical literature. The museum is supposed to become the center of the local revolutionary history.

Basis for the preservation of cultural assets and for their scientific research

This section of the ZPM is funded by the People's Government of Zhejiang Province and was completed in 2004. Their work serves the museum system of Zhejiang Province. The knowledge about the preservation of cultural objects is made available to the entire province. Key technologies all over China.

Activities of the ZPM

The ZPM organizes around 40 temporary exhibitions annually, some with a Chinese theme, some with international exhibitions, etc. a. from Germany, France, Switzerland, Japan and Singapore.
