Prudence Heward
Efa Prudence Heward (born July 2, 1896 in Montreal , † March 19, 1947 in Los Angeles ) was a Canadian painter .
Life
Efa Prudence Heward came from a wealthy family. She was considered precocious and extremely intelligent. For her early years she was home schooled, and at the age of fifteen she attended the prestigious Miss Porter's School in Farmington . She showed an interest in art and her family nurtured her talent. After graduating from school, Heward studied at the Art Association of Montreal School .
During World War I , Heward lived in England where her brothers served in the Canadian Army . She herself served as a volunteer with the Red Cross . After returning to Canada, she joined the Beaver Hall Group . In 1924, Heward exhibited her work for the first time in a collective exhibition at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in Toronto . She had her first solo exhibition in 1932 at the Scott Gallery in Montreal.
Between 1925 and 1926, Heward lived in a room in the Montparnasse district of Paris and studied art history at the private Académie Colarossi . During her studies at the Académie, she often visited the Café du Dôme , a well-known artists' meeting place on Montparnasse, where the American writers Morley Callaghan , Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald frequented. She soon became close friends with the painter and philanthropist Isabel McLaughlin (1903-2004).
In 1929, Heward's career got a major boost when her painting Girl on a Hill won first prize in the Governor-General Willingdon Competition and got an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada . In the following years her health deteriorated noticeably - she had suffered from asthma since childhood . A car accident in 1939 made matters much worse, and Prudence Heward died while seeking medical treatment in Los Angeles. Although Heward never achieved great fame, she was internationally known and respected in artistic circles.
