Psodos quadrifaria , also called Riesengebirgsspanner , is a butterfly ( moth ) fromthe Spanner family (Geometridae).

features

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is about 18 to 25 millimeters. The fore and hind wings are glossy black-brown in color and unmistakable due to the very conspicuous orange-yellow to light-yellow, wide transverse bars in the post-fiscal region . There are black-brown fringes on the edges. The antennae are bristle-shaped in both sexes, and ciliate briefly in the males. The trunk is well developed. Because of the flat arched forehead, the species is sometimes referred to in Switzerland as the "yellow-rimmed flat-fronted spanner".

Caterpillar, pupa

Adult caterpillars are brownish in color, have dark slashes and a light side stripe. The doll shows a light, reddish tint and wing sheaths with dark veins.

distribution and habitat

The species is found in high altitudes in the Alps , the Pyrenees , the High Tatras and the Balkan Mountains, sometimes in the Giant Mountains . It was therefore also referred to as the "Giant Mountains Spanner". However, this German name is misleading as the species is predominantly found in other areas. Psodos quadrifaria rises to heights of 2700 meters. The main habitat is mountainous rough meadows above the tree line .

Way of life

The moths are diurnal, like to fly in the sunshine, rest on the vegetation with their wings spread flat and can be found in one generation from late May to mid-August. The caterpillars feed on the leaves of various lower plants and overwinter.

Danger

In Germany, Psodos quadrifaria occurs only in the Bavarian Alps, in some places very numerous. The species is therefore classified as not endangered on the Red List of Endangered Species . Older information from Baden-Württemberg is doubtful, as the mountains there do not reach the heights that would suggest indigenous occurrences.
