The bill spruce thistle ( Ptilostemon chamaepeuce ) is a species in the genus ivory thistles ( Ptilostemon ) in the family of Compositae (Asteraceae).
features
Ptilostemon chamaepeuce is a shrub or dwarf shrub that reaches heights of 30 to 100 centimeters. The leaves are narrowly linear and have no thorns. Those of the flowering shoots are pointed, as long as the rest of the leaves and neither slit nor broadened at the base.
The basket shell has a diameter of 13 to 20 (rarely up to 23) millimeters. In Ptilostemon chamaepeuce var. Chamaepeuce are the middle bracts pointed or tapered and indistinctly banded. In Ptilostemon chamaepeuce var. Elegans Greuter , on the other hand, the tips of almost all bracts are subpulate, 2 to 5 (rarely up to 7) millimeters long and turned back. The heads are arranged in a cluster of umbrellas .
The flowering period extends from April to June.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 32.
Occurrence
Ptilostemon chamaepeuce occurs in the eastern Mediterranean . The distribution area extends from Albania and Greece via Crete and the Aegean Sea to Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Cyprus. On Crete, the species grows at altitudes from 0 to 850 meters in limestone crevices, less often in walls and dry river beds. Sometimes it can also be found here in non-grazed, stony or rocky Phrygana and in open forests.
