The Ptychochrominae are a subfamily of the cichlids (Cichlidae). There are a total of 16 known species of Malagasy cichlids, which are in five genera .

All Malagasy cichlids have a typical cichlid shape with a moderately high-backed body, a large head and a slightly split mouth. The fish are 18 to 35 centimeters long. All species live exclusively in Madagascar , many endemic to just a few rivers and lakes.

Danger

Most species are endangered by the importation of foreign fish species such as tilapia , largemouth bass , giant gouramis , carp , gambus and guppies , which compete with the cichlids for food or eat their young. Some species are probably already extinct. Various institutions are trying to save the Malagasy cichlids from extinction through conservation breeding.

Malagasy cichlids are substrate spawners who usually lay their eggs openly on a stone.
