Puccinia rata is a stand fungal art from the order of the rust fungi (Pucciniales). The fungus is an endoparasite of the daisy family Eremosis leiocarpa (Syn. Vernonia leiocarpa ). Symptoms of the infestation by the species are rust spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces of the host plants. It occurs in Central America .

Macroscopic features
Puccinia rata can only be recognized with the naked eye from the spore beds protruding on the surface of the host. They grow in nests that appear as yellowish to brown spots and pustules on the leaf surfaces.
Microscopic features
The mycelium of Puccinia rata grows as with all Puccinia TYPES intercellular and forms Saugfäden that grow into the storage tissue of the host. Their spermogonia and aecia are unknown. The uredia of the fungus growing on the underside of the host leaves are light cinnamon brown and have colorless paraphyses. Their light golden brown uredospores are 25–28 × 24–28 µm in size, ovate to broadly ellipsoidal and spiky. The parts of the species that grow underneath the leaves are cinnamon-brown and uncovered, sometimes they are framed by paraphyses. The golden to light chestnut brown teliospores are two-celled, usually broad ellipsoid, warty and 35–42 × 26–29 µm in size. Their stem is colorless.

The known distribution area of Puccinia rata extends from southern Mexico to Honduras .
ecology
The host plant of Puccinia rata is Vernonia leiocarpa . The fungus feeds on the nutrients present in the storage tissue of the plants, its spore beds later break through the leaf surface and release spores. The species goes through a macrocyclical development cycle , of which only Telien and Uredien and their host are known so far; Spermogonia and Aecien could not be assigned to her.
