Pulau Chermin (also: Pulau Churmin ) is a small island in the mouth of the Brunei River in Brunei .

geography

The island is part of the Seria Anticline and, as part of the Brunei Inner Bar, forms an extension of the Pulau Berambang hill , which extends from southwest to northeast into Brunei Bay . This formation stretches further north in the island of Pulau Kaingaran . Due to the folding of the layers, numerous ridges run parallel to each other, and so Pulau Pepatan and Pulau Baru-Baru in the east are the foothills of the neighboring ridge.

The opposite coast in the west with the settlements of Kampung Sungai Besar ( Jin Kota Batu ) rises immediately to over 100  m .

Pulau Chermin itself rises only a few meters above the water level. It has a teardrop-shaped floor plan and is now densely forested and uninhabited. The Chermin Rock lies 183 m off the north coast of the island in the shallows of the river mouth.

history

The island played a role in the history of the sultanate because the Sultan Abdul Mubin withdrew there several times during the civil war of Brunei . Abdul Mubin had killed his predecessor, Muhammad Ali . His opponents urged the newly appointed Bendahara Muhyiddin to rebel against Abdul Mubin. At first Muhyddin hesitated. His followers began to cause unrest by attacking palaces and houses with spears. On the advice of Muhyiddin, Abdul Hakkul Mubin moved his palace to Pulau Chermin to sit out the crisis. After his move, however, Muhyiddin proclaimed himself the fifteenth sultan and a military conflict ensued.

After lengthy fighting, during which Abdul Mubin had in the meantime fled to Kinarut in Sabah , Muhyiddin was able to enter into an alliance with the Sultanate of Sulu and the combined troops began to encircle Abdul Hakkul Mubin on Pulau Chermin. The Bruneian troops Muhyiddin presented themselves available were after, Bukit Chendana added, they should cannons make ready the targeted Pulau Chermin. In the meantime Sulu's troops have been transferred to a position near Pulau Kaingaran.

Pengiran Karma , possibly a general and relative of Muhyiddin, and the Sulu forces, led by Betara Sulu , were able to dock their ships at Pulau Chermin. They met the sultan in the mosque of Chermin, where he had taken refuge. The Sultan Abdul Hakkul Mubin begged for mercy, but was killed with the Garrotte or the Kris . According to the Silsilah Raja-Raja Berunai , the sultan was buried in Pulau Chermin.
