Pulkas was an English alternative- and nu-metal band from London , which was founded in 1995 and located about 2002 under the name I: I: AM dissolved.

history

The band was formed in 1995 by singer Luke Lloyd, guitarist Martin Bourne, bassist Jules McBride and drummer Rob Lewis. The members had previously met on the London Underground . Through a first demo , which contains the songs Control and This Is It , the band reached the attention of Earache Records , whereupon they won a recording contract with the label. The group had made less than a dozen performances by then. Pulkas was the first to be heard on the Earache Records sampler Earplugged 2 with the song Hippy Fascist . In 1998 the label organized the Next Gen Tour, in which Pulkas also took part in Misery Loves Co. , Janus Stark and Dub War . In March 1998 the group went on tour through Great Britain , Spain and Belgium for the release of the debut album Greed produced by Colin Richardson . In 1999 further gigs, including Biohazard , were held. The group also went on tour through Great Britain in February with Liberty 37 and One Minute Silence . Since the band had broken off all contact with Earache Records, but the release of three more albums was still contractually agreed, both parties were in legal dispute with each other for about two years. In October 2002, shortly after hiring a new drummer, the band announced their renaming to I: AM: I and announced a gig in London with Aconite Thrill , The Goose, Zero Cipher and Mumcuss. The band later broke up.

style

Christian Graf described the band's music in his Nu Metal and Crossover Lexicon as "a brutal cross between Deftones , Helmet and Tool ". According to Allmusic , the band has often been compared to Korn or Tool, but the group rejected these comparisons. Robert Müller from Metal Hammer also wrote that listening to the album reminds you of Korn. Luke Lloyd's influences would include Led Zeppelin . On the album, the band circumvented “rigid riff schemes and offensive hopping with dry and precise grooves and the energetic performance of Mr. Lloyd , which is characterized by the directness of punk ”. In an interview with Müller, Lloyd stated that they tried to capture the good listening impression that they had live on the album. Müller Greed had reviewed an issue earlier . The group then combines the rhythms of Korn and Coal Chamber with fine, almost poppy melodies, which would also stand out between loud guitar riffs, and the " laconic hardness of the British hardcore sound ". The music is suitable for fans of groups from Clawfinger to Helmet. Michael Schleutermann from Rock Hard found strong parallels to bands like Machine Head in his album review due to the riffs, the vocals and the arrangements . Due to the deep bass and weird nuances, the group also reminds us of Korn, while a partly haunting, partly morbid atmosphere is more reminiscent of Tool. Overall, the song material is not very original.
