Pumping Iron is a documentary drama from 1977 and is considered the cult film of bodybuilding . It illustrates the preparation of various bodybuilders for the competitions Mr. Olympia (including the leading actors Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno ) and Mr. Universum from 1975 in Pretoria , South Africa.
While the majority of the actors train together in the legendary Gold's Gym in Venice, California, Lou Ferrigno (who later became a series actor in the television series The Incredible Hulk ) is preparing in New York under the guidance of his father.
The film is not just a documentary because certain content and scenes were invented to make the film more interesting. However, the stage footage is real and has not been recreated for the film.
The film is now also available on DVD with extensive additional material.
