Franco Columbu

Francesco "Franco" Columbu (born August 7, 1941 in Ollolai , Sardinia ; † August 30, 2019 in San Teodoro , Sardinia) began his career as a boxer and powerlifting fighter . He was one of the earliest professional bodybuilders and later worked as a chiropractor , non-fiction writer, and film actor .

Life

Columbu grew up on the Italian Mediterranean island of Sardinia. At the age of 13, he left school to work on his parents' farm and tend sheep. He later moved to Munich as a guest worker , where he first worked as a bricklayer and finally as a taxi driver . In 1965 he met Arnold Schwarzenegger at a bodybuilding event in Stuttgart . When Schwarzenegger moved to Munich in 1966, he became his training partner and best friend.

In 1969, at Schwarzenegger's instigation , Joe Weider brought Columbu to the United States , where Columbu became a professional bodybuilder. Despite his height of just 1.65 m and weight 86 kg, he was considered one of the strongest men in the world for many years. He held a number of powerlifting world records and won several titles in bodybuilding, including the title of Mr. Olympia in 1976 and 1981 , which is considered the highest honor in professional bodybuilding. While he was still competing, he founded a construction company with Schwarzenegger and earned his living, among other things, with real estate and as an actor.

After retiring, he earned a doctorate in chiropractic and nutritional science . From 1978 he finally worked full-time as a chiropractor and wrote a number of bodybuilding books on training and nutrition. In addition, he advocated women's bodybuilding early on and published publications on this. In 2001 Columbu was inducted into the IFBB Hall of Fame .

In 1986 Columbu was Schwarzenegger's best man at his wedding to Maria Shriver . In 2006 he was appointed to the board of certified chiropractors in California by Schwarzenegger, then governor of California . Like Schwarzenegger, Columbu was a Republican member and lived in Los Angeles . After his first marriage to Dr. He married Anita Columbu in 1990 to his girlfriend Deborah, with whom he later had a daughter. His total fortune was estimated at about $ 10 million. He died during a vacation stay as a result of a heart attack while swimming off San Teodoro in Sardinia.
