The Aguayo pumped storage power plant is a pumped storage power plant (PSK) in Cantabria , Spain . It lies on the Río Torina in the dam Alsa Torina ( Spanish Presa de Alsa Torina ). The PSK went into operation in 1982 (or 1984). It is owned by Repsol and operated by Repsol.

Upper basin Mediajo

The Upper Mediajo Basin is located in the municipality of San Miguel de Aguayo . It is an artificially created pool that is used exclusively as the upper pool of the PSK. The basin was completed in 1981.

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is an embankment dam with an asphalt seal and a height of 37 m above the foundation level , which is built around the basin. The top of the dam is at an altitude of 1162 m above sea level . The circumference of the dam crest is 2782 m. The volume of the dam is 4.7 million m³.

pool

With the normal storage target of 1160 m, the upper basin extends over an area of around 0.4 (or 0.44) km² and holds 10 (or 0.11) million m³ of water.

Alsa dam

The Alsa (or Alsa Torina) dam is located in the municipality of San Miguel de Aguayo. It dams the Torina into a reservoir that is used as the lower basin of the PSK. The dam is used to generate electricity. It was completed in 1920 (or 1921). In 1981 the original dam was increased to increase the capacity of the reservoir.

From the dam there is a canal (Spanish Canal de Alsa ) that leads to a hydroelectric power station (Spanish Central hidroeléctrica de Torina ), which is located in the municipality of Bárcena de Pie de Concha . The installed capacity of this power plant is 14 (or 15.95) MW .

Barrier structure

The barrier structure is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 49 (or 49.32) m above the foundation base. The top of the wall is at a height of 843 m above sea level. The length of the top of the wall is 190 (or 202) m. The volume of the dam is 85,500 m³.

The dam wall has a flood relief , through which a maximum of 100 m³ / s can be discharged. The design flood is 124.78 (or 125) m³ / s.

Reservoir

With the normal storage target of 842 m, the reservoir extends over an area of around 1.8 (or 1.83) km² and holds 21.46 (or 22 22.6 22.9 or 23) million m³ of water.

power plant

Repsol took over the power plant from Viesgo in 2018 as part of the purchase of several power plants.

Aguayo I

The installed capacity of the PSK is 340 (or 360) MW . The power plant went into operation on July 27, 1984. Four Francis pump turbines , each with a maximum output of 85 MW , are installed in the machine house, which is located below the Alsa dam . The maximum power consumption of a pump turbine in pumping operation is 83.6 MW. The maximum flow rate is 125.2 m³ / s in turbine operation and 95.2 m³ / s in pump operation for all pump turbines. The fall height is 328.5 m.

Aguayo II

Aguayo II is a planned PSK with an installed capacity of 1000 MW. The planned annual generation is given as 2 billion kWh . The four Francis pump turbines should each have a maximum output of 250 MW. The maximum flow rate is 360 m³ / s in turbine operation and 312 m³ / s in pump operation for all pump turbines. The two penstocks , the machine house and the substation are to be built underground. In the switchgear , the generator voltage is increased from 15.75 kV to 400 kV using power transformers.

The construction costs are given at 620 million . The construction work is expected to take 5 years.
