The dot-stripe Argus fish ( Selenotoca multifasciata , Syn . : Scatophagus multifasciatus ) is a brackish water and marine fish that occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the coast of Sulawesi in the west to New Caledonia in the east. It also lives on the coasts of Australia, but not on the south coast.
features
It can reach a maximum length of 40 cm. The fish are greenish with a silvery sheen. The top of the head and "neck" are brownish. On the back they show a faint brass-colored sheen. The lips are black, in individuals who are smaller than 6 cm, the rear edges of the soft-rayed sections of the dorsal and anal fin are black, as well as the rear edge of the caudal fin. Specimens that are larger than 4 cm have 7 to 15 narrow, vertical bands on the sides of the body, which dissolve into individual points below the side line . These are smaller than the diameter of the eyes. The mouth is small, horizontal and not protractile (cannot be extended). The larvae of the fish ( tholichthys stage ) are characterized by a large head with thick bone plates. Over time, the tholichthys stage passes over into the adult fish through the regression of the head armor. In juvenile fish, the spines of the dorsal, anal and ventral fins are provided with a thin, poison-secreting glandular tissue.
- Fin formula : dorsal XI-XII / 16, anal IV / 16, pectoral 16, ventral I / 5.
ecology
The point-stripe argus fish lives in shallow water down to depths of five meters, especially in brackish mangrove areas and estuaries, harbors and the lower reaches of rivers. It feeds on worms, crustaceans, insects and plants.
