Purshia mexicana is a species of plant in the genus Purshia within the rose family (Rosaceae). It occurs in the northern part of western Mexico , in the region of the Sierra Madre Occidental . An English-language common name is Mexican cliffrose.

Occurrence
The distribution area of Purshia mexicana extends from the west of the Mexican plateau and the southern Sierra Madre Occidental in the south northward to a small region in northwestern Sonora ; the distribution area is continuous in the Cordillera from Chihuahua south via Durango and Zacatecas and most of the north of the Sierra Volcánica Transversal , although some disjoint populations exist in the Sierra Volcánica Transversal.
In its mostly mountainous or high-lying area of distribution, Purshia mexicana grows in forests, deserts and the habitats of the plateau.

Systematics
It was first described in 1825 under the name Cowania mexicana D. Don by David Don in Transactions of the Linnean Society of London , Volume 14, Issue 3, page 575, Plate 22, Figures 1-6. The new combination to Purshia mexicana (D.Don) SLWelsh was published in 1986 by Stanley Larson Welsh in Great Basin Naturalist , Volume 46, Issue 2, page 260.
Purshia stansburyana ,nativeto the southwestern United States , is sometimes considered a variety of Purshia mexicana .
