Kevin Puts
Kevin Matthew Puts (born January 3, 1972 in St. Louis ) is an American composer . In 2012 he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize of Music for his opera Silent Night .
life and work
Kevin Puts studied at the Eastman School of Music and then graduated from Yale University with a Masters degree . He received his Doctor of Musical Arts from the Eastman School. In 1996 he became composer-in-residence with the Young Concerts Artists and the California Symphony .
In 1999, his Concerto for Everyone was premiered at Carnegie Hall by the New York Youth Symphony . Since then he has composed numerous compositions, including 4 symphonies (another opus, originally announced as the 5th symphony, was premiered under the title The City as a double commissioned work by the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and Carnegie Hall in 2016), a percussion concert (with Evelyn Glennie as the world premiere soloist ) and the cello concerto Vision , whose solo part was played by Yo-Yo Ma at the world premiere .
Kevin Put's many awards include the Barlow International Prize for Orchestral Music (1999), a Guggenheim Fellowship (2001), the 2001/2002 Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, and a 2003 prize for orchestral composition from the American Academy of Arts and Letters . In 2012, Puts received the Pulitzer Prize of Music for his (so far only) opera Silent Night , which premiered at the Minnesota Opera in 2011 and is based on the film Merry Christmas . In 2014 the opera had its European premiere at the Wexford Festival .
From 1999 to 2005, Puts taught composition at the University of Texas at Austin . Kevin Puts has been a member of the composition department at the Peabody Institute in Baltimore since 2006 . He is also the director of the Minnesota Orchestra Composer's Institute.
