Location of Puxi in Shanghai

Puxi ( Chinese , - short form of the Huanpu River, 西 , - West) denotes all districts of the city of Shanghai that are west of Huangpu Jiang . The newly created east side is called Pudong .

The city center of Shanghai is in Puxi; it is divided into city districts, which are administratively at the district level, i.e. have their own parliaments (people's congresses) and governments.

The most important urban districts of Puxis are:

  • Xuhui : Shanghai's new shopping and lifestyle center. Currently (2005), Xuhui also has the highest real estate prices in the city. Big companies like Microsoft, IBM, HP, Google, KFC, Lufthansa and more reside here.
  • Changning : "international" district with a high proportion of foreigners. Many Germans and French settled here in the 1990s .
  • Huangpu : Historic District; here is the famous Bund , Nanjing Lu Shopping Street , Shanghai City Government, People's Square and many popular clubs and restaurants.
  • Hongkou : formerly a financial center, today better known for universities such as Shanghai SIS University or Tongji University , which have the closest ties to German universities. Numerous German students study here.

The former Luwan District , the old financial center of Shanghai, where many major Chinese schools have settled, was dissolved on May 20, 2011 and incorporated into the Huangpu District.
