Pylades ( Greek  Πυλάδης ) is in Greek mythology the son of King Strophios of Phocis and Anaxibia , sister of Agamemnon (who is also known as Kydragora or Astyoche).

He is the loyal companion and friend of the young Orestes , who grew up with him. He later marries his sister Elektra and with her they have sons Medon and Strophius .

In the epics of Homer Pylades is not mentioned. He plays an important role above all in the tragedies of the classical period such as Aeschylus ' Choephoren and Euripides ' Orestes and Iphigenia among the Taurians, as well as their post-ancient adaptations such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Iphigenie auf Tauris and the opera Iphigénie en Tauride .
