Pyrithyldione is a medicinal substance that has a calming and sleep-inducing effect. Medicines containing pyrithyldione are no longer on the market worldwide. The active ingredient was marketed by Roche under the name Persedon , but it caused agranulocytosis more frequently .

Historical Persedon packaging

Like glutethimide , methyprylon and thalidomide (trade name Contergan ® ), pyrithyldione belongs to the piperidinediones , which differ from the barbiturates by replacing a lactam group (–CO – NH–) with –CH 2 –CH 2 - or –CH = CH– distinguish.

Pyrithyldione hit the headlines in 1987 in connection with the death of Uwe Barschel when it was found in his corpse along with other substances.
