Qamar Rahman

Qamar Rahman (born August 15, 1944 in Shahjahanpur , Uttar Pradesh ) is an Indian biochemist . A research focus is environmental and industrial toxicology , in particular the toxicity of fibers and dusts as well as of nanoparticles .

Life

Rahman studied chemistry at Agra University (India), where she obtained her MSc degree in 1967 and her PhD degree in 1974 . The topic of her thesis was " Chemical aspects of the toxicity of mineral fibers ". Since 2003 she has been dean for research and development as well as director of the Institute for Biotechnology at Integral University in Lucknow (India), which emerged from the renowned "Integral Institute for Technology". Rahman is also an honorary professor at Hamdard University in New Delhi . Until 2003 she was at the Industrial Toxicology Research Center(ITRC) in Lucknow, which has more than 500 employees, as deputy director and division manager for risk assessment and inhalation toxicology as well as head of the department for toxicology of fibers and dusts. As a visiting scientist, Rahmen was already at the National Center for Toxicological Research , University of Paris XII , the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), Duke University , North Carolina, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (FZK) and the Center for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU) and the Center for Nanointegration Duisburg-Essen (CENIDE) at the University of Duisburg-Essen .

Rahman has been appointed to a number of bodies in an advisory capacity to the Government of India. In 2001 she was accepted into the National Academy of Sciences of India . In 2003 she received the “Uttar Pradesh Ratna” award. Due to the long-term research collaboration with the University of Rostock , Rahman received an honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Rostock in 2009. She is the first Indian citizen to receive this award from the University of Rostock.
