Juan Carlos Cardenas Toro

Juan Carlos Cárdenas Toro (born May 31, 1968 in Cartago , Colombia ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in Cali .

Life

Juan Carlos Cárdenas Toro studied at the National Seminar in La Ceja and at the diocesan seminary in Cartago. He later obtained a degree in philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He received the sacrament of ordination on September 6, 1997 for the diocese of Cartago .

In addition to various tasks in parish pastoral care and the training of priests, he was a spiritual companion of the Cursillo movement . Since 2010 he has worked for the Colombian Bishops 'Conference , first in the Pastoral Center for Evangelism and from 2014 in the Secretariat of the Bishops' Conference.

On 26 June 2015 it appointed Pope Francis to the titular bishop of Nova and auxiliary bishop in Cali. The Apostolic Nuncio in Colombia, Archbishop Ettore Balestrero , donated him episcopal ordination on July 25 of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Nueva Pamplona , Luis Madrid Merlano , and the Bishop of Cartago, José Alejandro Castaño Arbeláez OAR .

In 2019, Auxiliary Bishop Cárdenas was elected General Secretary of the Latin American Council of Bishops (CELAM) for a term of office until 2023 .
