Ettore Balestrero (born December 21, 1966 in Genoa ) is a diplomat of the Holy See .

Life

After studying law , he entered the Almo Collegio Capranica and was ordained priest on September 18, 1993 by the cardinal vicar and archpriest of the Lateran Basilica , Camillo Cardinal Ruini . He received a degree in theology and a doctorate in canon law . After working in the parish of Santa Maria Mater Ecclesiae al Torrino in Rome , he became a student at the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy .

He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See on July 1, 1996 and served in the nunciatures in Korea , Mongolia and the Netherlands . He has served in the State Secretariat since 2001. He became State Secretary for Relations with States , succeeding Pietro Parolin , who was appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Venezuela on the same day. His job was to oversee the work of the Office of Relations with States and to maintain contacts with ambassadors around the world. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on August 17, 2009 as Undersecretary for Relations with States and the Vatican Bank IOR.

On February 22, 2013 he was welcomed by Pope Benedict XVI. Appointed Apostolic Nuncio in Colombia and Titular Archbishop pro hac vice of Victoriana . He was ordained bishop on April 27th of the same year by the Cardinal Bishop of Frascati , Tarcisio Bertone SDB ; Co-consecrators were the Cardinals Marc Ouellet PSS and Fernando Filoni . On July 6, 2018 he was appointed charge d'affaires of the Apostolic Nunciature in the DRC appointed. The previous nuncio in the Congo, Luis Mariano Montemayor , was appointed his successor as apostolic nuncio in Colombia on September 27 of the same year. On April 27, 2019, Pope Francis appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

He has an American mother and is fluent in English, as well as French , Spanish , German and Dutch .
