Quercus, Associação Nacional de Conservação da Natureza, is a Portuguese non-governmental organization in the field of environmental protection . It is based in Bairro do Calhau in the capital Lisbon , in the Parque Florestal de Monsanto forest park . The association has a total budget of around 1.5 million euros and is largely financed by donations.
The non-profit , politically independent organization Quercus was chosen in memory of the Latin name for the oaks , holm oaks and cork oaks that are threatened in Portugal .
history
Quercus was founded on October 31, 1985 in the city of Braga .
In 1992 the association was awarded the Global 500 Award of the United Nations Environment Program and received the Order of Infante Dom Henrique honorary from President Mário Soares .
Since 2004 the organization has been awarding the Prémio Quercus, an annual environmental award .
In 2016, the first sister organization, the legally and organizationally independent Quercus Cabo Verde , was founded in the former Portuguese colony of Cape Verde .
Goals and structure
Goals and principles include a. the rejection of genetic food and the use of nuclear energy , as well as avoiding waste , creating awareness for resource conservation and keeping drinking water clean and the sustainable development of alternative energies .
The association is democratically structured and organized in a decentralized manner. The head office is now in Lisbon, including the association in 18 regional groups ( Núcleos Regionais ), also in the Azores and Madeira . On the latter island, after the flood disaster of February 2010, Quercus spokesman Hélder Spínola's criticism of building and environmental sins received international attention.

With “ Quercus Ambiente ” the organization publishes a bi-monthly newspaper that also functions as a members' magazine . The most important means of communication are also the association's own homepage and the association's Facebook page .
Quercus TV has existed since 2007 for the production and distribution of videos related to the organization.
