The Quirl is a table mountain in Saxon Switzerland on the left Elbe .

Location and surroundings

The whisk rises two kilometers south of the city of Königstein in the so-called area of stones , a part of Saxon Switzerland in which the typical table mountains ("stones") are characteristic. The Pfaffenstein and the Königstein are in the immediate vicinity .

In the north side of the whorl, the thief's cellar, is a large layer joint cave in Saxon Switzerland.

history

Until around 1800 there were fields on the Quirl that belonged to the Pfaffendorf hereditary estate . The Quirl was later closed to the public because of its proximity to Königstein Fortress and the fields were abandoned.

In the German War of 1866 the old footpath to the summit plateau was blown up so that Prussian troops could not position any artillery there.

geology

The whorl consists of grade c sandstones, which are classified in the middle Turon of the Cretaceous on the geological time scale . In more recent publications these sandstones are also referred to as Postelwitz layers . The summit plateau corresponds to the intermediate layer γ3. The layer joint cavities on the north side of the whorl lie in the slightly weathered intermediate layer γ2.

Paths to the summit

The best starting point for a visit to the Quirl is the city of Königstein. There begins a hiking trail marked with a red dot , which continues on the north and west side around the Quirl to the neighboring Pfaffenstein . This path is also part of the Malerweg , the main hiking trail in Saxon Switzerland. The Forststeig trekking route set up in 2018 leads over the summit plateau . The forest path also leads over the listed Kanonenweg on the southeast side of the Quirl, a path paved with sandstone slabs. Further unmarked climbs are located near the thief's cellar on the north side.
