Company history

In 2000, Kraftwerke Brusio AG (Poschiavo), AG Bündner Kraftwerke ( Klosters-Serneus ) and Rhätische Werke für Elektrizität AG ( Thusis ) merged to form the Rätia Energie AG group, which was also joined by aurax ag ( Ilanz ) in 2004 . In 2002 the group started its activities in Italy, in 2007 it started trading in Prague . From 2009 the company was also active in Romania and Germany. production

Repower has its own power plants in Switzerland, Italy and Germany. Different technologies are used ( water , thermal , wind ). In-house production totaled around 1.66 terawatt hours in 2018. The company also has long-term supply contracts with nuclear power plants in Switzerland and France. At the end of 2015, Repower announced a new strategy which, among other things, provides for in-house production from 100 percent renewable energy. As part of Strategy 2025, the sale of the stakes in the gas-fired combined cycle and nuclear power plants is also being examined.

In 2018, Repower generated an average of 153 grams of CO 2 equivalents and 7 cubic millimeters of nuclear waste per kilowatt hour. Among the four largest energy groups in Switzerland - in addition to Repower, these are Alpiq , Axpo and BKW - Repower did the best with an average of 178 environmental pollution points (EP).

Thermal power plants

The company holds 61% of SET SpA (Milan), which operates the Teverola gas-fired combined cycle power plant (Province of Caserta, Italy). This 400-megawatt system went into operation at the end of 2006.

Nuclear energy

The company has long-term purchase agreements for nuclear power in Switzerland and France. The contracts correspond to an installed capacity of almost 50 megawatts.

Renewable energy

Hydropower plants

The group operates 15 of its own hydropower plants in Graubünden (Switzerland). It also has holdings and subscription rights for other systems. The total installed capacity from hydropower is 405 megawatts.

Wind power plants

In Italy, the group operates a wind farm in Corleto Perticara (9.3 MW) and one in Lucera (26 MW). It is involved in another wind farm in Giunchetto, Sicily (Repower share: 11.6 MW). In Germany, the company is involved in two wind farms in Prettin (10 MW) and Lübbenau (16 MW).

The subsidiary Repower Renewable in Italy, founded at the end of 2018, comprises a total of ten wind farms, six solar systems and two small hydropower plants. Repower Renewable's production facilities have a total output of more than 70 megawatts and an annual production of over 132 gigawatt hours.

trade

The group generates around two thirds of its electricity sales in retail, in 2018 this was more than 12 terawatt hours.

The company is represented on the most important European energy exchanges via a trading floor with trading locations in Poschiavo (Switzerland) and Milan (Italy). The group sees itself as an asset-based trader and trades in electricity, gas and CO 2 certificates. The energy that is partly self-produced and partly purchased from third parties is usually delivered to wholesale customers at the highest voltage level in physical shops. When doing business with certificates, the group also serves larger end consumers with ecological added value, regardless of line. The group supplies standard products such as base, peak or offpeak as well as timetables in the wholesale trade.

The following additional qualities can be supplied as ingredients for products in the respective balancing group:

  • "TÜV SÜD Generation EE" proves the certification of the generation of electricity from renewable energies (CMS Standard 83), and the production can be traced back to a clearly identifiable source.
  • The “ok power” label offers an additional environmental benefit. In the so-called dealer model, the provider undertakes to deliver 33% each from systems that are less than 6 or 12 years old.
  • The "GSL" label generates additional environmental benefits in that part of the customer's money is invested in new systems for generating renewable energy.

transmission

With the construction of the international Bernina line (380 kV / 220 kV), which went into operation in 2005 and was transferred to the national grid operator Swissgrid at the beginning of 2013, the company made a significant contribution to the expansion of cross-border capacities between southern and northern Europe.

In October 2009, the company, together with Edison and the municipality of Tirano, was able to inaugurate Europe's first AC merchant line, to which Repower and the partners involved will have exclusive rights of use for another ten years. The line runs completely underground between Tirano (Italy) and Campocologno (Switzerland). Thanks to the 150 kV merchant line, cross-border transport capacities will be increased by 150 megawatts, which will contribute to the security of energy supply in Italy and Switzerland. A 220 kV merchant line between Bergell and Italy is currently in the approval process.
