The Réserve écologique de la Rivière-Rouge is a 319.83 hectare protected area established in 1997 in the southwest of the Canadian province of Québec .
The area is 4 km northwest of Calumet not far from the Rivière Rouge , which flows into the Ottawa. The nearest town is Lachute , a city located 75 km northwest of Montreal . It belongs to the Regional County Community of Argenteuil ( Laurentides Administrative Region ) in the Laurentine Mountains .
The protected area is divided into three units, namely the plateau, which is on average 200 m above sea level, the undulating slope and the terrace that extends to the river. Up to a height of 180 m - this is how high the water masses rose after the glaciers melted - there are layers of clay that lie above the glacial till . At the border of the reserve there is brown earth , in some places also gley .
The better draining areas are dominated by sugar maple ( Acer saccharum ), which, depending on the soil composition, is accompanied by American linden ( Tilia americana ), American beech ( Fagus grandifolia ) and yellow birch ( Betula alleghaniensis ). In addition, there are the American red oak ( Quercus rubra ), the white ash (Fraxinus americana), hop beeches of the Ostrya virginiana species and the Canadian hemlock ( Tsuga canadensis ), which are found in less good soils. There is red maple (Acer rubrum) frequently.
In the more humid areas there are mainly black ash ( Fraxinus nigra ), American elm ( Ulmus americana ), then the common spruce ( Picea abies ), which, however, was planted by humans.
