The Réserve écologique internationale Thomas-Sterry-Hunt is an ecological reserve in the south of the Canadian province of Québec .

It was established in 1988 on an area of 56.1 ha. It is in the Montmagny regional county town on the border between Québec and Maine . It protects bogs typical of the border region in the Appalachian Mountains , which at no point are more than two meters thick.

Three sinks form the focal points of the three moor areas that lie in the protected area. In the west there is a nutrient-rich fen, supplied by watercourses, in which sweet grasses and peat moss predominate. In the middle bog, a low-nutrient bog or low bog due to a lack of inflow, where low stands of a few black spruce trees that reach 1.5 to 3 m height live. Here the peat moss is abundant and rich in species. The eastern moor, near the border with the United States, is extremely humid. Peat moss also live there, but mainly Carex , heather and larches . The Xyris montana from the genus Xyridaceae , which belongs to the order of the sweet grass (Poales), is endangered .

The white-tailed deer , which is very numerous on the island , as well as the Urson (French: Porc épic), and rabbits are observed as animal species .

The name of the cross-border reserve refers to the American chemist, mineralogist and geologist Thomas Sterry Hunt (1826-1892) from Norwich , Connecticut , who taught at the Canadian universities of Laval and McGill, as well as geology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston . He published 330 scientific articles and published a monograph on the geology of Canada with William Logan .
