The Río Ica is an approximately 157 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in the southwest of Peru in the regions of Huancavelica and Ica .
River course
The Río Ica arises in the Peruvian Western Cordillera at an altitude of about 1700 m at the confluence of the Río Tambo (right) and Río Olaya (left). Including the Río Tambo ( ⊙ ), the total length is about 215 km. The Río Ica initially flows 30 km in a west-southwest direction through the mountains. Then it turns 20 km to the southwest and reaches the coastal plain. At San José de los Molinos there is a weir ( ⊙ ) built in the 2010s , from which almost all of the river water is diverted for irrigation purposes. The course of the river, which has fallen dry almost all year round, gradually turns south. This is channeled in sections in the lower reaches. He passes the city of Ica at river kilometer 100 . Agriculture is practiced on irrigated fields along the river. The river has almost no water for the last few kilometers and finally reaches the Pacific coast. The Río Ica usually only carries water during the rainy season.
Catchment area
The natural catchment area of the Río Ica covers an area of 7711 km². This was artificially increased by 392 km² by the feed line from the flow- regulated lake Laguna Choclococha ( ⊙ ). In the north the catchment area of the Río Ica borders on that of the Río Pisco , in the south on that of the Río Grande .
