The district of San José de los Molinos is located in the province of Ica in the region of Ica in southwestern Peru . The district founded on June 14, 1876 has an area of ​​363.2 km². At the 2017 census, 6,987 inhabitants lived in the district. In 1993 the population was 5453, in 2007 it was 6070. The district administration is located in the 535  m high town of San José de los Molinos with 3172 inhabitants (as of 2017). San José de los Molinos is located about 16 km north-northeast of the city center of the regional and provincial capital Ica on the eastern bank of the Río Ica, which flows south-south-east . A weir has been built near San José de los Molinos in recent years . On the eastern bank of the weir, almost all of the river water is diverted into the La Achirana del Inca canal and is mainly used for irrigated agriculture.

Geographical location

The district of San José de los Molinos is located in the north of the province of Ica on the western flank of the Western Peruvian Cordillera . The length of the district in NW-SE direction is 30 km. The Río Ica crosses the district in a south-southwest direction. Irrigated agriculture is practiced in the river valley of the Río Ica.

The district of San José de los Molinos borders in the southwest with the district San Juan Bautista , in the west with the district Salas , in the northwest with the district Humay ( province Pisco ), in the extreme northeast with the district Huancano (also in the province Pisco), to the east to the districts of Huaytará and Ayaví (both in the province of Huaytará ), to the southeast to the district of Yauca del Rosario and to the south to the district of La Tinguiña .
