The district of Santiago is located in the province of Ica in the region of Ica in southwestern Peru . The district founded on October 31, 1870 has an area of 2783.81 km². At the 2017 census, there were 27,645 residents in the district. In 1993 the population was 11,176, in 2007 it was 16,298. The district administration is located in the 374 m high town of Santiago with 7615 inhabitants (as of 2017). Santiago is located about 13 km south of the city center of the regional and provincial capital Ica on the eastern bank of the south-running Río Ica .
Geographical location
The district of Santiago is located in the southeast of the province of Ica. The longitudinal extent in NNW-SSE direction is 90 km. The Río Ica traverses the south of the district in a southerly direction before reaching the Pacific coast . The district has about 45 km of land coastline in the south of the province of Ica. In the northeast the district extends to the foothills of the Peruvian Western Cordillera . The area consists to a very large extent of desert. Irrigated agriculture only takes place in the northwest of the district and along the course of the Río Ica.
The district of Santiago borders in the west on the district Ocucaje , in the northwest on the districts Ica , Pueblo Nuevo , Tate and Pachacutec , in the north on the district Yauca del Rosario , in the northeast on the district Tibillo ( province Palpa ) and in the east on the districts Santa Cruz (also in Palpa Province) and Changuillo (in Nazca Province ).
