The Río Moche is a 102 km long tributary of the Pacific Ocean in northwestern Peru in the La Libertad region . The Moche culture , which existed in the river valley between the 1st and 8th centuries , was named after the river.

River course

The Río Moche rises in the Peruvian western cordillera south of Quiruvilca at an altitude of about 4000  m . It flows mainly in a westerly direction through the mountains. At river kilometer 20 the river reaches the coastal plain, which it crosses in a west-southwest direction. It flows through the southeastern suburbs of the city of Trujillo and finally flows into the Pacific Ocean.

Catchment area

The 2708 km² catchment area borders on that of the Río Chicama in the north and that of the Río Virú in the south .
