The Río Nieva is an approximately 195 km long right tributary of the Río Marañón in northern Peru in the Amazon region . The Río Nieva drains the western flank of the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera south of the Río Marañón. It flows through the provinces of Bongará and Condorcanqui .
River course
The Río Nieva rises in the Cordillera Campanquiz, a ridge of the Central Cordillera , at an altitude of about 2100 m . The Río Nieva flows in a predominantly northerly direction through the mountains. It separates the Central Cordillera from the Eastern Cordillera in the middle and lower reaches. The national road 5NC crosses the river at Puente Nieva 60 km above the estuary . This forms river loops in the lower course . The Río Nieva finally flows into the Río Marañón, which flows eastwards, at the provincial capital Santa María de Nieva .
Catchment area and hydrology
The catchment area of the Río Nieva extends over an area of about 3300 km² (according to other sources: 2739 km²). It borders in the southeast on that of the Río Mayo , a left tributary of the Río Huallaga , and in the west on that of the Río Chiriaco . The Zona Reservada Río Nieva is located on the upper reaches of the Río Nieva . The mean discharge of the Río Nieva is 323 m³ / s.
