Santa María de Nieva is the capital of the Condorcanqui Province in the Amazonas region in northern Peru . In the 2017 census, the population was 2,510. It is the administrative seat of the Nieva district .
Santa María de Nieva is located on the south bank of the Río Marañón at the mouth of the Río Nieva coming from the south . The city at an altitude of 195 m is 40 km above the confluence of the Río Santiago into the Río Marañón in a basin landscape in front of the Andes.
Santa María de Nieva is connected to the road network. A road connection leads to Bagua , which is 140 km southwest . Most of the residents work in agriculture, fish in the river, cut trees, raise livestock and trade in the products produced in the region.
